Beginner’s HDR Photography Course – Art of HDR

The Art of HDR Photography – A Beginner’s Course

High Dynamic Range processing can turn your photos into stunning images that mesmerize onlookers. Yet, getting that ‘Wow’ factor is not an easy thing to achieve when you first start out. On top of the steep learning curve involved in using HDR programs, you also have to have awareness of the myriad of pitfalls that are a side-effect of the HDR process.

Jimmy McIntyre, experienced HDR photographer and trainer, has created this course to push you through that learning curve and arm you with the necessary skills in Photomatix and Photoshop so that you too can produce stunning HDR imagery.

Is this course for you?

The real question is: Are you getting the best out of your HDR images?

This course was designed for beginners and low-intermediate photographers. However, the level of depth in this workshop could appeal to HDR photographers across the board.

Please note: This course assumes that you know what HDR is and how to use the correct settings on your camera. It does not introduce you to the Photomatix sliders one-by-one. Instead, you will learn what the most important sliders do as we work through the images. That way you’ll gain an intuitive sense of what Photomatix can do for your photos. This is a process-intensive course with very little talk of theory. From the first second until the end, we work on processing techniques.

How long is each video?

Each video varies in length. In total you get around 3.5 hours of tuition. However, This is not a ‘quick fix’ workshop. With the knowledge that you can press pause at any time, I work incredibly quickly. Processing each photo in real time would take hours so I give you all of the steps and show you all of the techniques but you don’t have to sit and watch me work through it all. You’d fall asleep if that was the case! If the videos were real time the length of the workshop would be closer to 20 hours.

Are the videos HD?

You will be able to work happily with both the video quality and sound quality which are good. The videos are 1280 x 720 in size. To keep the download size manageable, the videos are not HD but that shouldn’t be an issue.

How much does it cost?

The entire Art of HDR series costs just $29.99

I’m not a beginner but I still have a hell-of a lot to learn about HDR and I don’t use Photomatix or Photoshop. I use LR 4.x and Nik’s HDR & some PSE9 if I have to.

    Would this course benefit me?

You mentioned earlier you would be doing a Nik HDR tutorial, when will this be coming up?

    Thanks,
    Bill

    • Jimmy McIntyre

      Hey Bill,
This course wouldn’t be for you as it’s 100% Photomatix and Photoshop. I do plan on creating a Nik tutorual soon but I’m afraid I don’t have a date.

      Thanks and all the best

      Jimmy

      • Bill

        Jimmy,

        Thanks,
        Bill

HI Jimmy, Could you confirm that ps6 and photomatix4 are the required software. Are there any other required softwares?

        • Jimmy McIntyre

          Hi there,

Photoshop cs6 and older will be fine and Photomatix 4 is recommended. I strongly recommend a good noise removal program as well.

          I hope that helps.

nice course jimmy, great price and lots of little tips and techniqes, well worth the price.I do like the style of how the course was presented.thanks a bunch

  • Ray E.

I recently downloaded them and being new to HDR I wasn’t
exactly sure what to expect or if I would understand what Jimmy was talking
about. Upon viewing the first video, I immediately knew these videos were
exactly what I needed. Could I say that it was just one thing in particular
that appealed to me? No, not really. It’s the totality of everything included,
the easy to follow work flow, the included tiff images, the explanations of why
some things work and some things don’t, tips, short cuts, different ways to
achieve the same result and his confidence inspiring and reassuring voice. It’s
all of these factors that, for me, makes these work flow videos perfect. I’m excited
and eager to start applying these techniques to my own HDR shots and finally
begin to start fine tuning and honing my skills and perhaps one day produce
some images that are as stunning as those produced by Jimmy McIntyre. Do
yourself a favor and spend the $19.99 and get the videos, you won’t regret it
    for a moment!

  • Nikon_bob

Just a quick question. I don’t use Photoshop, but I do use Photomatix. My workflow is done in the TopazLabs suite with use of Elements 11 as a jumping off point. My question is, how much of the course relies on Photoshop?

    • Jimmy McIntyre

      Hi there,
The course is probably 90% Photoshop, so I’m not sure this would be right for you. Photomatix is just the initial platform upon which we build in Photoshop.

Sadly, I’m not sure you’ll get the most benefit from this course.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chucksears Chuck Sears

I would be interested in a course specific to HDR in Photoshop only. Any plans for this in the future?

    • Jimmy McIntyre

      Hey Chuck!
Other than Photoshop’s 32 bit merge function, I don’t use photoshop for HDR. I’m sure it’s great for some people, but it isn’t my first choice and I’m not sure there’ll be much demand for it. If things change I’ll be sure to let you know.

      Thanks for asking, though.

  • Richard

    hello jimmy
thus your tutorial includes the single HDR post process from photomatix to Adobe Photoshop? Thanks in advance.

    • Jimmy McIntyre

Very sorry for the late reply. I didn’t see this when it was posted. The tutorial is about 20% in Photomatix and the rest in Photoshop.

      Thanks
      Jimmy

  • Derek Willis

I have just invested in the art of HDR tutorials, and I would like to thank HDR One for putting them together. Informative and easy to follow with great quality video. Thanks HDR One from a satisfied customer.

  • Richie

Apologies if I’m being a bit dim from the answers already given, but can I get anything out of the tutorial with Photoshop Elements 10 and Photomatix Essentials? If not, what if I only upgraded Photomatix?

    • http://strange-lands.com/ Jimmy

Let me see if I can be clear so you can check compatibility. In Photoshop, you need masking capabilities, a noise removal plugin, unsharp mask filter and the dodge and burn tools. As well as various other tools like the clone stamp and most adjustment layers.

In Photomatix, you just need Details Enhancer in the Tone Mapping option.

      I hope that helps Richie.

      • Richie

That is perfect and it looks like all I need to do is get myself a noise removal plugin and purchase the tutorial!

Looking forward to taking my HDR to the next level, thanks!

  • Doug

Great pictures Jimmy love following you! Always look forward to seeing your new awesome HDR work. I am trying to learn NIK HDR Efex Pro 2.0 and Photoshop workflow so not sure your tutorial would be right for me. Any chance you might be doing the NIK and Photoshop version soon.
Thanks in advance and keep those awesome shots coming
