The Dolomites

Title – Dolomite Mountain Range

Photographer – Andrew  Lowther

Description and technical information

A shot of part of the Dolomite mountain range in June this year above the ski resort of Cortina in northern Italy, a place frequented by the rich and famous in Winter months.

Taken with a Canon 5D Mk II, with L series 16-35mm lends at 16mm. However, the final image shown here was a tight crop on the original to try and show the scale of the mountains to the village houses.

HDR processing in PS5 HDR Pro, with Nik HDR Effex Pro and Viveza for final touching.

Taken towards the end of the day, with the sun on its way down. Tripod was essential for 3 long-exposure shots at f9 and ISO100. Fortunate to have next to no wind to spoil the shot.

Having taken up HDR photography about a year ago, I find myself near the bottom of a steep learning curve, striving to match my skills to my passion. I have yet to find ‘my style’, and have experimented with different looks for my photos. I seem to be discovering a recurring preference for a more natural look and a ‘better photo’ than would normally come out of the camera.

I spend my days running my business of picture framing (, and my spare time either taking photos or processing them – and love every minute of it.
